Sunday Stamps #4

Last week was a celebration of theme stamps, specifically volcanoes.

This week, in celebration of the Chinese New Year, I am sharing with you some Chinese stamps.  These are from Postcrossing postcards I have received recently. I really like the top ones, as they show several different types of classic Chinese art.

The new year is the year of the Rabbit, and I almost scanned some rabbit stamps from Belarus!  Aimee has a great postcard and stamp that she has already posted.

Do you have some Chinese or rabbit stamps to share?

Theme next week: rockets and space!

Postcard Friendship Friday: Jan. 28

Night time view: Moonlight on Causeway to Atlantic Ocean, Fort Pierce, Fla.
No further information on the back.  Mailed from Fort Pierce to Ft. Lauderdale and postmarked Jan. 20, 1949.
Also has a long message from the vacationing May and Edna to their friend Ruth.

This card is also part of my Florida card collection, and is in really great shape.  I'm in the cold and snow, but I hope I can find time to relax this weekend.  I hope you can too.
Thank you Beth for hosting Postcard Friendship Friday!

Sunday Stamps #3

Welcome to Week 3 of Sunday stamps.  Last week's stamps were a nod to the hobby of stamp collecting.  This week:  I'm showing some stamps on a particular topic or theme, in my case, volcanoes.
Many countries issue commemorative stamps just for collectors, but hey, they can be so interesting.  In some cases, little treasures.  Fun to collect, or, as I did, purchase a lot of a certain theme from a dealer on ebay.  :-)

Do you collect stamps of a certain theme, that you would like to show off?  Feel free to blog about it, and link in below.  It's easy!

Feel free to include this button in your post. I would love to see it used. Thank you Itkupilli for the button.

Postcard Friendship Friday: Jan. 21

Beth has a postcard of Martin Luther King and I wish I had something appropriate.  All I have is another is my series of Florida postcards.
From the front: S-9 - Looking east in Ringling Art Museum, Sarasota, Fla.
From the back: "INNER COURT OF RINGLING ART MUSEUM, SARASOTA, FLORIDA
Both nature and man have combined forces to make the Ringling Museum of Art one of the nation's most beautiful spots.  In the long galleries that border this lovely court, outstanding works of some of the world's most famous artists are displayed.  The 76 life size statues surmounting the building represent characters from ancient history and mythology.  An atmosphere of old Europe prevails throughout the entire visit to the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art."

So much florid prose that there is only a small amount of space in which to write a message!

The Ringling Museum is still going strong.

Thank you Beth for hosting Postcard Friendship Friday!

Sunday Stamps #2

Welcome to week 2 of Sunday Stamps.  I started with a stamp that was, indeed a miniature piece of art - and a copy of a larger piece of art.

Today's stamps are pieces of art too, commemorating the hobby of stamp collecting.  Click and enlarge them to see the detail.  These stamps are also engraved - you can feel the ridges as you run your fingers over them. [Edited to add:  They just LOOK as if they are engraved - no ridges.  However they are almost the last of this style produced.]  I think they are some of the last USA stamps to be produced in such a way.

Feel free to include this button in your post. I would love to see it used. Thank you Itkupilli for the button.

here is the code to paste into your blog:

PFF: let's go to Florida

According to the Weather Service,  there is snow on the ground in every state except Florida.  Let's pack those bags and GO!

On the back: "The Coral Flamingo is one of nature's greatest combinations of grace and beauty, and at the Rare Bird Farm, just south of Miami, Florida, they may be seen and photographed at their best.  These birds have become so tame that one can get within a few feet of them.  Here, amid natural surroundings, one would think they were somewhere on Great Abaco or Andros Islands, in the Bahamas, their native habitat."
Not mailed, but with a handwritten message in pencil: " I saw 450 of these birds on parade Saturday it was a sight. Some of them re black underneath or a [illegible] white.  Most of them dark pink."

Thank you Beth for hosting Postcard Friendship Friday!

New Sunday Stamps button from Itkupilli

I now I have a designer button for Sunday Stamps!  I asked Itkupilli, who designed the blog background and header I am using, for help.  She graciously helped me out.  Please check out my sidebar for the button.

Please check her recent postings - maybe there is a beautiful yet quirky background for your blog there?  Is it time for a redesign?

Thank you again, Itkupilli!

Sunday Stamps #1

Announcing a new meme: Sunday Stamps!
This meme is just to share interesting stamps: they don't have to be collectible or rare.  They can be commemoratives from your country; stamps from Postcrossing, even stamps purchased from a specialty store or ebay.

I am starting with the stamp that started it all for me, back in the 1980's.

I had noticed stamps before of course.  I was in graduate school and my current boyfriend at the time collected stamps, which I thought rather amusing.  Then C. visited my university as a postdoc and started receiving packages from home, in France.  This stamp was on one of the early packages.  It took my breath away.  Such detail, of a beautiful stained glass window, in such a small frame!

Well, then I began to accumulate in earnest.  The keeping of stamps in an album lasted only as long the boyfriend did (not long) but I still  save stamps, and when I have a few, soak them off the envelopes.  Now that I am in Postcrossing I get many more stamps from around the world.  I don't destroy the the postcards however to get the stamps off!  This is when a flat bed scanner is so very useful.  If you follow  this blog or Postcard Friendship Friday, then you have seen some of my collection.

Tell us about your stamp stories, and link in below. Email me at viridian61 at yahoo.com if you have any problems.
